Think about the bond between

potassium and oxygen in

potassium oxide. In order for this
to form, what must happen?
Potassium has 1 valence electron.
Oxygen has 6 valence electrons.
Two potassiums must each donate
1 valence electron to the oxygen to
cause potassium oxide to form.
The potassium atoms become
cations and the oxygen atom
becomes an anion. The attraction
between the charges causes them
to bond to each other ionically. The
formula is K2O.

Consider the formula for zinc

nitrate. How many zinc ions does it
have? How many nitrate ions does
it have?
The formula for zinc nitrate is
Zn(NO3)2. It has one zinc ion and 2
nitrate ions in every formula unit of
zinc nitrate.

If you had a formula unit of tin (IV)

selenide, how many ions of tin
would you have? How many ions
of selenium would you have?
Tin (IV) selenide has the formula
SnSe2. Therefore, a formula unit
has 1 ion of tin and 2 ions of
selenium.

How many sulfate ions are in one

formula unit of gallium (III) sulfate?
The formula for gallium (III) sulfate
is Ga2(SO4)3; thus, there are 3
sulfate ions in each formula unit of
gallium (III) sulfate.
