    Group A streptococcal pharyngitis is most common in school-aged children and accounts for 15-30% of pharyngitis cases. It presents acutely and is usually treated with penicillin. Without treatment, it can lead to complications. Epstein-Barr virus causes infectious mononucleosis, which presents with symptoms resembling a viral upper respiratory infection like pharyngitis.
