On balance, the benefits of genetically modified foods do not outweigh

the harms.
In the last three decades, industrialized agriculture, biotechnology and extensive
use of pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilizers have resulted in a nutrientdeficient soil, mineral & nutritional deficiencies in soil, weak immune system in
human beings and animals, new diseases, viruses & global warming.
Contention 1- Multiple Toxins from GMOs Detected In Maternal and Fetal
Blood
Sub point a -Research from Canada (the first of its kind) has successfully identified
the presence of pesticides -associated with genetically modified foods in maternal,
fetal and non-pregnant womens blood. They also found the presence of Monsantos
BT toxin. The study was published in the Journal Reproductive Toxicology in 2011.
Also the Seralini studies of 2007,09,and 11 found that the consumption of Monsanto
GMOs to certain scales caused near-catastrophic damages to the livers, hearts, and
kidneys of rats, mostly as a result of dangers associated with hepatorenal toxicity

Sub point b- GMOs harm to humans and livestock (that we eat):

There have been numerous cases where animals have died or became seriously ill
and were put down in order to avoid mass contamination or to calm down the panic
that would have caused even more damage to the food industry. In Hessen,
Germany many cows died suddenly when they were fed with Syngentas genetically
engineered maize cow food and as a result of this incident the authorities in
Germany decided to slaughter the rest of the cows to avoid having the mysterious
disease to get out and contaminate other cattle houses. Syngenta did admit that
the protein used for the cow food maize is also used for human genetically modified
foods.

Contention 3- Indian Farmers Committing Suicide as a Result of
Monsanto's GM Crops
Sub point a- As a result of Monsantos GM seeds many families of farmers
have lost their livelihood and lands and are left on their own to struggle
with starvation and misery. 1.1 billion or 60% of Indian population are
directly or indirectly dependent on agriculture.
After use of Monsantos BT cotton in 2002 the rate of suicide in Indian farmers
increased drastically. 90% of Indian cotton farmers changed to Monsantos Bt crop
hoping that Bt crop are pest resistant and they do not have to buy pesticides.
However after a while Bt cottons pests resistant quality started fading away and
pests adapted so farmers had no choice but to buy and use Monsanto's pesticides.

The fact that farmers have to buy new seeds every year, the costly use of GM
seeds, use of pesticides and great reduction in crop value have often times left
farmers bankrupt and as a result many farmers are falling into the endless cycle of
debt, depression, hopelessness and despair and they have no choice but to ends
their lives. The figures provided by NY University School of Law show that
just in 2009 alone, 17,638 of farmers committed suicide.
Sub point b- People are taking in GMOS without even knowing it
U.S and Canada do no label the GMOS resulting in the customers unaware
of what they are consuming.
