Flagstaff
On July 4, 1876 explorers from
Europe came to visit the new land of
Flagstaff. Here they flew Arizona's first
American flag. A few years later, people
from all over the country began to move to
Flagstaff. At that same time the A & P
Railroad was built. This railroad ran from
one end of the country to the other. It gave
the city a lot of jobs.
Most people in these jobs cut and
shipped lumber. The lumber came from the
bark of the forest trees. When the city got big enough a college named
N.A.U. was built. At first this school was small, it had only 23 students! Today
more than 27,000 people go to the school.
Today visitors come to Flagstaff because it is the coolest city in the state
and it snows! In the winter you can find people skiing at Snowbowl or hiking
on the mountains.

The Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon is one of the Seven
Wonders of the World. Each year more than
5 million people come to see the 17 million
year old canyon. Scientists say that the
canyon was carved from the Colorado River.
The Grand Canyon is more than 227 miles
long, 4 miles across and 1 mile deep!
For almost one thousand years the
Native American tribe called the Havasupai
have lived here. The word "havasupai"
means people of the blue-green-water. These people live in houses called
wikiups, which they make from desert plants. This tribe does not buy their
own food. They grow crops of fruits and vegetables and hunt for their meat.
The water they drink comes from the Colorado River.
At the Grand Canyon you can find people taking pictures, camping,
hiking, or riding horses.

Tombstone
Tombstone is one of the oldest towns
in Arizona. It can be found in the middle of
the Sonoran Desert. In 1879 an explorer
named Ed found silver that could be dug up.
Cowboys and miners from all over the
country moved to Tombstone. Within a few
years at least 18,000 people called Tombstone
their home.
Not long after everyone moved to
Tombstone there was a huge fight between the
cowboys and police at the OK Corral. Then a
huge fire hit Tombstone. This fire burned down
more than 60 stores. After the fire, most of the people moved out of
Tombstone making it a ghost town.
Today, Tombstone is known as one of the most popular towns in the
Wild Wild West. Visitors come from all over to visit the OK Corral and the old
restaurants.
