1. Draw Mohr circle diagram and derive the related analytical expression for principle stress and
angles. What is expression for maximum shear stress?
2. Define pure shear stress. Draw the Mohr circle corresponding to these states of stress.
3. Write the expression for SCF for an elliptical hole located at the centre of an infinite plate. The plate
is being subjected to an tensile stress. Plot the variation of stress with distance for the edge of the
hole. What will be the SCF of the minor axis of the elliptical hole tends to zero? What is expression
for SCF for a notch located at the edge of a plate.
4. Using the Tresca, criterion, show that yield strength of a ductile solid is half of yield strength in
tension of the same material. Also derive the same relation using the Von-Mises failure criterion.
5. Give the reason why dilatational energy (volumetric energy) is not important for failure of ductile
solids.
6. What are the main theories of material failure? Describe each in detail. Diagram the 2-dimesional
failure diagram for three main theories discussed in the class.
7. Differentiate between Plane stress and Plane strain state of materials. Give the examples as well.
8. Show that maximum shear stress develops at 45 degree of axis of loading in uniaxial loading. What
is normal stress corresponding to that?
9. Where do you use a cotter joint? Give practical examples. Why is cotter provided with a taper? Also
give the reason for taper on the cotter is only one side.
10. Give the practical examples of a knuckle joint. What are the advantages of a knuckle joint.
