Person of the Week: Dallas Holland

Radford Student Striving to Succeed

November 18, 2013 --- Dallas Holland, hopes to use her Communications and Spanish degree to
work with international companies to break the culture barrier and market to Spanish companies.
With her dedication and work ethic there is doubt she will succeed.
I currently just quit working at the New River Grille, said Holland. I was working over 20
hours a week and it become more difficult to have the full college experience and complete all
my work. I knew I had to decide what would be best for me and I knew it had to be my
education.
Holland started working at restaurants when she was 15 years old. Her decision to give up
working was not an easy decision. However, she knew that she wanted her full attention to be on
school.
I honestly did not plan on going to college. I just went to my counselor and she told me to apply
to a couple schools. I applied to ballet program at Virginia Commonwealth University but could
not attend because of my academic standing, said Holland. I didnt even tell anyone I was
applying, I just did it.
Holland admitted she had no intention on attending college until the moment she received her
acceptance letter from Radford.
A New College Student
I am the first person in my family to attend college, said Holland. I also just became the
oldest out of all my cousins to not have a baby. I have cousins a few years older than I am, who
have children. My parents are proud that I am attending college and furthering my education.
Hollands family is proud of her and all her accomplishments she has made throughout her time
at Radford University. Without a doubt she is excelling at the university and doing everything
she can to put her education first.
This summer I am going to Costa Rica to study aboard. I am pretty excited to go. I think it will
be beneficial to my education because I have been speaking Spanish since I was grade school. If
I play my cards right I hope to even get a public relations internship there this summer.
