COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a beginners level course in reading. Students will read
a variety of fiction and non-fiction and learn skills to decode meaning in text.
COURSE OBJECTIVES/EXPECTATIONS:
1) Students will progress from a Beginner Level to an Intermediate Level in Reading
2) Students will be able to progress from a picture childrens book to a chapter book.
3) Students will be able to follow instructions to complete multi-stepped projects.
4) Students will be able to complete a simple research project.
MATERIALS: Textbook Themes for Today, various handouts & videos, & library books
SUPPLIES: Students are required to come to class with the following materials: 1 threering binder(Note: same binder can be used for Reading, Conversation & Review class),3 binder
dividers, standard (8 1/1 x 11") filler paper; highlighters, pens, pencils, and erasers.

METHOD OF EVALUATION: Students will be evaluated with weekly quizzes, periodic


exams, regular homework and (2) major projects including a book report and a research
project.
Final Grade will be weighed as follows: Projects 25%, Exams/Quizs 25%, Homework 25%,
Participation 25%
GRADING SCALE:
Points: 95-100 A 90-94 A- 86-89 B+ 83-85 B 80-82 B- 76-79 C+ 73-75 C 70-72 C66-69 D+ 63-65 D 60-62 D- below F
ABSENCES
Per El Camino policy, students are allowed four absences per term. After the third
absence, you will be required to speak with the Program Manager to track attendance. If
you continue to miss class, at the 5th absence, your grade will be lowered an entire
grade. At your 6th absence, your grade will be lowered once again an entire grade. At
the 7th absence, you will fail the class and are at risk to leave the program.
Students should arrive on time with books and materials daily and be ready to work
when class begins. Please notify teacher if you are aware of an upcoming absence, and
notify the Program Manager if you will be absent for a long period.
TARDY POLICY

Students are expected to arrive on time, with all class materials. Any student who is
tardy will receive an F for Participation on that day. If a student is tardy for a quiz or
exam, he will not receive any additional time to complete the exam.
