HW 1
Engine Characteristics
PROBLEM 1 :

a) The engine of a medium sized automobile produces its maximum power of 115 [PS] at an
engine speed of 6000 [rpm]. Calculate the engine torque at the same engine speed. Ans. :
135 [Nm].
b) The maximum torque of the engine of a heavy commercial vehicle is specified as 1600
[Nm] at an engine speed of 1400 [rpm]. What is the power, in [kW], [hp], and [PS],
produced by the engine at maximum torque point ? Ans. : 235 [kW], 315 [hp], 319 [PS]
c) The power and torque produced by a IC engine at a certain engine speed are specified as
100 [kW] and 180 [lbf.ft]. Calculate the corresponding engine speed. Ans. : 3913 [rpm]
PROBLEM 2 :

to represent the power curve of an ICE, obtain the elements of the matrices [D] and [E] in the
following matrix equation for the three unknown coefficients A, B, and C, in terms of P1, P2,
, separately for

a) the correct torque peak and

b) correct power peak
formulations.

PROBLEM 3 :
Short specifications for an IC engine are given as below.
Maximum power = 280 kW at 2100 rpm,
Maximum torque = 1700 Nm at 1050 rpm.
Estimate the power and torque developed by the engine at an engine speed of 1600 rpm under
fully open throttle conditions using the correct torque peak formulation.
Ans. : 265 [kW], 1583 [Nm]
