HUM/130 Effect of Religion

Effects of Religion
Siddhartha Guatama during 6th Century B.C.E. 1 began his journey for Shunyata and
Anatta through meditation for greater spiritual understanding. Siddhartha sought to obtain
ultimate enlightenment by creating a religion of love and kindness. The spiritual wisdom he
gained brought popularity to Buddhism. Those who choose to follow this peaceful religion
rejected older religions; which called for sacrifices, fasting, worshiping in idols, and the
violences which follows2. Buddhism then and now has a positive effect on society.
Second effect religion has had on society is their ability to control political polls in the
government. A hot topic always in the spotlight has been abortions. Some people believe a life is
a soul sent from God to do his work on earth and should not be terminated at any stage of
pregnancy. Through the eyes of a religious follower this is murder and is a punishable sin. While
others argue an embryo is not a life and the mother shouldnt have to carry on the unwanted
pregnancy. Politicians have used this topic to get potential voters to sway which way they want
them.
