GRADE 1 MARCH NEWSLETER

MARCH 2015

Language Arts - Reading

The children have been working hard on inferring meaning from books. When you read together, please
ask them to look for clues in pictures and words to see if they can figure out what the author is saying.
They love the song about INFERING (to the tune of My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean), ask them to sing it
to you!

Language Arts - Writing

We have been learning to write with our voices, and to match our voice to the purpose of our writing. For
example, the voice of a letter of compliment to a toy company or a restaurant is different from the voice of
a letter of complaint. The children really enjoyed listening to the different voices in the story THE DAY
THE CRAYONS QUIT, and they enjoyed taking the voice of one crayon and matching it to a purpose.

Mathematics
We have just finished up our unit on Graphing and Probability. The children have learned how to conduct
a survey, collect data (using graphs and tallys). We have also learned how to write about what our graph
shows.
We will be starting our unit on MEASUREMENT. Please see the website for fun links/games/activities to
keep your children engaged in their learning, as well as our learning goals and success criteria for this
unit.

Science
We have finished up our Energy Unit. Ask your child about sources of energy (input and output). We had
a great time making our toys, and following the energy chain to see what makes them move!

Social Studies
We are starting our new unit: COMMUNITY. The focus is our wants and needs, and how our community (people,
buildings, etc.) meets our needs. We will be going for a community walk. As well, we are always looking for parents
who can come in and talk to us about their job is, and how they contribute to our community. Please let us know if
this is something you can help us withits a highlight for all of our students!
