direct result of the
fundraising efforts you have
all assisted in over the past
year. The students are truly
enjoying these new
resources and are actively
engaged in a variety of
literacy and numeracy
lessons and activities
throughout the day. We
thank you for your
continued support.

Welcome back to all our

friends and families!
We missed you all dearly. We hope everyone had a
blessed and restful holiday filled with lots of great
memories with your families and friends. We want to
thank you all again for your generosity and
thoughtfulness over the holiday season. January is

Making Math Meaningful

This month we will focus on composing and
decomposing quantities to 10 as we investigate
addition and subtraction in everyday activities
through the use of manipulatives.
We will also work on recognizing quantities
without having to count using a variety of math
tools such as dominoes, dot plates, and dice.

Some activities to help support your

childs learning at home are:

How Many Now

Gather several small objects (e.g.,
pennies, buttons). As your child watches,
place 5 pennies underneath an
overturned container, such as a plastic
margarine tub, or a napkin. Pause and
slide a few pennies under the
container/napkin at a time. Ask, How
many pennies/buttons are under the
container/napkin now? Lift the
container/napkin and have your child
count to check their answer.

Count to 10 a.k.a. NIM

Place 10 small objects in a pile and take
turns removing 1 or 2 objects at a time.
The person who removes the last of the
10 objects scores 1 point. Play until one
player has 5 points.

Reading and Writing Tips

We encourage you to continue to
practice letter and sound recognition,
invented spelling and sight word
recognition. We will be focusing on writing
complete sentences in class. You can
practice this at home by prompting your
child to ask themselves the following
questions when writing:

In addition, try to expose your child to a

variety of different print materials.
Encourage them to explore their
environment to identify the letters and
words present in their world. For example,
when driving to school ask your child to
read signs with you or look for symbol and
numerals around the neighbourhood.

Do I have an upper case letter at the

beginning?

You can also read words on cereal boxes,

read instructions to games or recipies, or
lyrics to favourite songs to help encourage
1:1 matching. Most of all have fun reading
and writing with them. Let them help you
and show them how enjoyable reading
and writing can be.

Did I use a .,!, or ? at the end?

Did I leave a finger space between my
words?
Is this my best printing?
Did I write down all of my ideas?
