Task #2
a. How is immigration a problem for the EU?
Immigration is a big problem for the European Union member states: the inflow of
citizens from former soviet states and their former colonies are an irritating inconvenience for
the EU members. Wealth enrichment has been the main reason for migration into the European
Union as well as the lack of development in the basic infrastructures available in Western
Europe: these are essential reasons why immigrants choose to take part in immigration.
Not only is immigration a problem for the EU to solve, but also is a danger for European
citizens. Likewise, terrorists are using immigration as a source of entry to other countries quietly
and legally. There have also been instances of ships that carry illegal immigrants by hiding them
amongst their goods. There is also the case of immigrants who are in fear of their lives in their
home countries for reasons such as religion, ethnicity or political allegiance. In addition, it is
widely perceived that immigrants are the reasons for the high unemployment rate in some of the
countries.
b. How are they dealing with this problem?
The overwhelming question of how to solve immigration has been difficult to answer. The
more prosperous European states are solving the problem of immigration by pushing for
tougher laws and restrictions on the notion of free movement within member states. Overall,
different governments and experts have all come up with different solutions.
For an example, the Swedish government is dealing with this problem not by restricting
the movement, but by regulating it. The Swedish government has already stated that they will
not restrict the movement of immigrants through its borders when the new member states join
the European Union. Unlike Swedish government, governments like the British, French and the
Germans, have called for tighter border controls with non-European member states. Overall, the
European Union is committed to the control of migration into the European Union.
