To whom it may concern:
Please accept this general cover letter as my potential interest for an entry or mid-level position in
Residence Life. I am currently a graduate student in the Student Personnel Administration in
Higher Education Masters program at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. A
position in Residence Life is of extreme interest to me because of the focus on diversity
appreciation, citizenship, social justice, and community collaboration available.
I am seeking positions that will allow me to develop and challenge my professional identity. My
experience as an undergraduate at Guilford College afforded me community building strengths as
a Resident Advisor and organizational President of the Campus Activities Board. The unique
focus on community and individual development in both of these positions, even as an
undergraduate student, helped me develop a unique talent of constructing and supporting
diversity and multiculturalism in a predominantly white student population. Additionally, my
continued endeavors at Guilford College as full-time Hall Director and Student Success Mentor
in a first year residential community built my unique talent into a strength, as I was the main
academic and student affairs collaboration liaison for the nine living- learning communities in my
community. Through the supervision of 10 Resident Advisors, we were able to create a first year
group that had a sense of cohesion, a respect of commonalities, and an appreciation of difference.
In concordance with development on the community level, I also worked with at-risk students as
a Student Success Mentor. Through the Hall Director position, I was exposed to high-impact
retention and recruitment practices centered on identity and student development theory.
Additionally, as a professional interest, I served as the Advisor to the Guilford College Pride
student organization, which was another perspective and skill- constructing experience in
community action, social justice, and identity development. Lastly, my position as an Assistant
Coordinator for Residence Life at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro in a first year
hall, the priority of my job is to coordinate and facilitate Mosaic, a social justice living-learning
community based in service learning, leadership development, and responsible citizenship. In
working with Mosaic, I can confidently say that I have honed my strength in social justice and
diversity inclusion community building and education into a professional expertise. In addition to
experience in the critical, administrative skills of the Area Director position, I would be
incredibly honored to have the opportunity to apply my experience and passion in responsible
community development to your Residence Life team. I will be able to bring to the table
strategies and practices for inter-campus collaboration, social justice education in privileged
populations, and a community and identity development focus that benefits the students and their
communities.
I am an energetic, relationship-motivated, and social justice-oriented individual who likes to be
proud of their work. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at
shrevejl@gmail.com or call me at 336.430.5568. Thank you so much for considering me and I
eagerly look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,

Justin L. Shreve
