Developed and constructed a miniature multi-axial Mesostructural Testing System

Developed a novel MRI 3D segmentation and reconstruction software system with
automatic contouring and heuristic shape identification.

(including branches and holes) using a combination of energy minimization and level

Developed a cantilever testing system and inverse FEA method for estimating the
elastic properties of healing bone (i.e. callus) in a rat fibula model.

Responsible for development of simulations and finite element models of the lumbar
spine, with emphasis on design and control of experiments using robotics with hybrid
control algorithms.

In charge of lab computer systems, development of new modeling software/hardware


systems (SGI and Pentium4, Linux, Windows)
Developed a new serial control interface for PUMA 762 robot with Mark III controller,
including programming a driver (C,C++) to provide pseudo-real time control from
Matlab.

Ph.D. Graduate Student, Department of Bioengineering, University of Pittsburgh


Thesis entitled: Delineation of in-vitro lumbar spine structural properties using a
robotic/UFS testing system with hybrid control: experiments and analytical simulation
Robotics technology was used to measure the highly non-linear 6-DOF kinetics and
biomechanical properties (e.g. stiffness) of the lumbar spine. Hybrid and compliant
control methods were programmed and implemented. Valuable new data was
obtained regarding the structural biomechanical contributions of spine ligaments,
facets, and the intervertebral disc to overall lumbar spine kinetics
Assisted in writing NIH R01 grant Development of a Robotics Based Spine Testing
System, funded (score = 14%, $750,000). Also co-authored peer-reviewed
publications (P.I., Lars Gilbertson, Ph.D.).

1994-1996

Responsible for experimental testing of a variety of hip implants using a custom
loading device and femoral micromotion measurement system (continuation of
masters research).
Developed a system to measure the 3-D shape of soft-tissues using a reflective laser.

M.S. Graduate Student, Department of Mechanical Engineering


Thesis entitled, Micro-motion measurements of hip Implants under simulated in-vivo
loads
Developed a system to measure 6 DOF implant/bone relative micromotion with 1
micron accuracy using custom-adapted linear variable differential transformers
(LVDTs).
