Screw
A screw is an inclined
plane wrapped around a
cylinder, forming the path
and pitch
In our SMET project,
the screw is cardboard
wrapped around a wooden
column that transfers
energy from the top of the
column to the bottom.

Wedge
A wedge is a moving
inclined plane
It tapers to a thin edge
and is used for splitting,
raising heavy bodies, or for
tightening by being driven
into something
In our SMET project, a
wedge made out of wood is
used to hold the beginning
marble in place, and it
moves out of the way to
allow the marble to pass.

Wheel and Axle

A wheel is a lever arm
that is fixed to a shaft, which
is called an axle.
The wheel and axle move
together as a simple lever to
lift or to move an item by
rolling.
In our SMET project, a
wheel and axle is on a hotwheels car that rolls down an
inclined plane and falls into a
cup to add more weight to a
pulley.

Pulley
A pulley is a lever
consisting of a wheel
with a groove in its rim
which is used to change
the direction and
magnitude of a force
exerted by a rope or
cable.
In our SMET
project, a pulley made
out of the core of a roll of
tape is used to raise a
flag from a lower point.

Lever
A lever is a rigid bar used
to exert a pressure or sustain a
weight at one point of its
length by the application of a
force at a second and turning
at a third on a fulcrum.
In our SMET project, a
lever made out of wood is
used by a marble hitting one
end and transferring energy to
a car that rolls in the opposite
direction.

Inclined plane
An inclined plane is a
flat surface set at an angle
or incline with no moving
parts that is able to lift
objects by pushing or
pulling the load.
In our SMET project,
an inclined plane is a piece
of cardboard that is set at
an angle to move a marble
from a high point to a lower
point.
