Screw
A screw is made of two
components, an inclined
plane wrapped around a
cylinder, forming the path
and pitch and a wheel
and axle used to create
rotary motion. In our
project we use a funnel to
create a screw. A marble
drops into our funnel and
spins around a minimum
of two times and exits
through an inclined plane.

Inclined Plane
A flat surface set at an
angle or incline with no
moving parts able to lift
objects by pushing or
pulling the load. In our
project we use pieces of
wood to create the inclined
planes, each with a groove
for the object to follow.
After a marble exits the
funnel, it roles down the
inclined plane, the piece of
wood, and drops into a box.

Pulley
A pulley is a lever consisting
of a wheel with a groove in its
rim which is used to change
the direction and magnitude
of a force exerted by a rope
of cable. Our pulley is made
of a wheel with a groove that
has a rope running through it
to allow it to move. The
pulley is connected to a box
on one side and a wedge on
the other. A marble falls into
the box and allows the wedge
to lift.

Wedge
A wedge functions as a
moving inclined plane which
tapers to a thin edge and is
used for splitting, raising
heavy bodies, or for
tightening by being driven
into something. In our
project we use cardboard to
create a wedge by gluing
one edge of each piece
together. The wedge is
attached to a box through a
pulley so when the marble
falls in the box, the weight
pulls the wedge up releasing
a car.

Wheel & Axle

A wheel is a lever arm
and an axle is a shaft that
when moving together as
a simple lever, can lift or
move an item by rolling.
Our wheel and axle is
made up of a toy car.
The car is behind a
wedge, and when the
wedge is lifted out of the
way, the car rolls down
an inclined plane.

Lever
A rigid bar used to exert a
pressure or sustain a
weight at one point of its
length by the application
of a force at a second and
turning at a third on a
fulcrum. In our project
we used two pieced of
plywood to create our
levers. After the car roles
down the inclined plane it
hits one lever, which
rotates and hits the
second lever causing it to
rotate and hit a block.
