Senate Boss Michael Sanchez Stalling Legislation To End Failed Policy Of Social

Promotion
Social promotion repeal has been in the Senate for over a month
Santa Fe, NM Senate boss Michael Sanchez is still refusing to act on a House bill that would
end the failed policy of social promotion. With less than a week to go, its abundantly clear that
Sanchez is trying to run out the clock and use his political muscle to stall key legislative
priorities.
The bill to end the failed policy of social promotion has been sitting in the Senate for over a
month, but Senate Leader Michael Sanchez would rather promote Washington-style gridlock
than respect the will of the people, said Rep. Gentry, Majority Floor Leader. New Mexicans
deserve better.
The House passed legislation to end the failed policy of social promotion in a bipartisan vote on
Feb. 11. The Senate has not even given the bill a committee hearing hoping that the
legislation never sees the Senate floor.
Promoting gridlock is nothing new for Sanchez. He delayed the confirmation of Education
Secretary Hanna Skandera for four years. He even admitted to one newspaper that he stalled the
confirmation because he knew the votes were there to confirm her. He said, I've known what the
votes were for four years.
Sen. Sanchez knows that there are enough votes on the Senate floor to end social promotion,
and that is why he is holding up the entire process, Gentry concluded.
