Materials needed: - Pizza Fractions (wooden and paper ones) - Smart Board Pizza Activity - Pictures of pizza slices with different toppings - Paper - Markers - Pencils - Writing Journals NB Essential Standards NCTM Standards SCO: N7: Demonstrate an understanding of fractions by using concrete and pictorial representations to: create sets of equivalent fractions compare fractions with like and unlike denominators NCTM Standards: Grades 35 Expectations: In grades 35 all students should develop understanding of fractions as parts of unit wholes, as parts of a collection, as locations on number lines, and as divisions of whole numbers use models, benchmarks, and equivalent forms to judge the size of fractions; recognize and generate equivalent forms of commonly used fractions, decimals, and percent; explore numbers less than 0 by extending the number line and through familiar applications. SCO English Language Arts Use a range of strategies in writing and other ways of representing, framing questions and answer to those questions and to record, develop, and reflect on ideas, attitudes and opinions. Lesson Objectives: In the lesson students will be introduced to the topic of fractions, however at this points students should be somewhat aware of how fractions work and what they resemble. Before we start into the lesson, students will be asked to write down everything they know about the topic of fractions. Once the students have written down their answers, then we will share those answers with the class as a whole. We will play a game with the students asking them questions such as I only like peperoni on half my pizza, can you make me that pizza? The students will also work in groups to create their own pizzas and then they will write down all their fractions on the sheet of paper. This will serve as a way to see where the students are at with their understanding of the concepts. Once the students have written out the fractions they are going to write a little story about their pizza, how they chose the topics, why they did not choose certain toppings, etc. Students will write their draft on a sheet of loose leaf, and their final copy will be written on a special sheet.
Differentiation Strategies to meet diverse learner needs:
- Students will be working in groups of three to five to help each other if there is an issue with the writing. (Students will be paired in groups by the teacher, strong students will be able to help those who may be behind or having a hard time with the math concepts, the pairs list is attached at the end) - Students will have physical wooden pizza pieces as well as pictures and paper. - Students will be given aid in the terms of the math concepts if need be. - Students will be able to come up with a story for their pizza.
Teachers Tasks Within Lesson:
- Teacher will explain the lesson to the class, by vocally explaining it, but also showing the example on the smart board, let the students drag the pieces for the explanation. Then once students are in their groups the teacher will walk around and help the students with their fractions. - Make the students have enough supplies in their groups - Provide aid to student with their writing - Provide a special sheet for their good copy of their stories. Students Tasks Within Lesson: - Students are to participate in the lesson - Students will work in groups of two of three to put together their fraction pizza. - Students will have physical representation as well as visual. - Students will work on their writing, they will be expected to use their resources in the classroom to help them achieve a good copy. Assessment of student learning - The students will write down everything they know about fractions in their math journals and perhaps something they want to know. - Students will also pass in their work sheets from activity we do in class. - Based off this information from students, the lessons will be formed around the already there understanding. - Students will be assessed on their writing abilities, their conventions, ideas, etc.
