Inferring, a Strategy to Enhance
Understanding
In Strategies That Work by
Stephanie Harvey inferring is defined
as
Inferring is the bedrock of
comprehension, not only in reading.
We infer in many realms. Our life
clicks along more smoothly if we can
read the world as well as text. If our
boss looks grumpy in the morning, it
might not be the best day to ask for a
raise. Inferring is about reading
faces, reading body language, reading
expressions,
and reading tone as well as reading
text. Mosaic of Thought adds this
information regarding defining
inference. from text. Proficient
readers use their prior knowledge
(schema) and textual information to
draw conclusions, make critical
judgments, and form unique
interpretations from text. Inferences

may occur in the form of conclusions,

predictions, or new ideas.
What does inferring look like in our
classroom?
We have used stories, and will
use cartoons, text and poems to infer
what their authors mean.
An example of how this is done in the
classroom uses a poem by Shel
Silverstein called

Sybil the Magicians Last Show.

Magical Sybil was much too cheap
To buy her rabbit a carrot
He grew so think, just bones and skin,
So starved he couldnt bear it--And so, as she reached into her hat
To grab him by the ears
She felt a tug, she felt a pull,
And WHAP she disappeared,
The greatest act weve ever seen,
We cheered for Magical Sybil
But all that remained was a hat and a
cape
And the sound of a bunny
Going, Nibblenibblenibble.
