Name of artist, Date, size and type of art:

Giuseppe Penone Tree of 12 Meters

CONTENT
What is happening in the image?
One thin and one thick tree made out
of a cut down tree
What do you think the story behind
the image is about?
My interpretation would be that you
cant rebuild nature if youve
destroyed it.
Is the image a part of a series?
Yes as theres and thin one and a
thicker once which could resemble
family?

FORM
What is in the
foreground and
background?
Its 2 12 meter
trees with a set in
the middle of the
room, this shows
the dominance of
the sculpture and
how its the centre
piece of the room.
What colours has
the artist used and
what affect do they
have on the work?
Its natural wood
which correlates
with the tree
before but it looks
more bare as the
branches dont look
stable as an actual
tree.

ANALYSING AN
ARTIST

MOOD
How does the work make you
feel?
It makes me feel small/out of
place as the dominance
overwhelms me.
What is in the image that
affects you?
The branches look like a
ladder leading up and up to
the heavens.

PROCESS
Where was it made?
Munich
What do you know about the
artist?
That he was in the
contemporary art movement.
Does the work relate to the
social or political history of the
time?
In 1969 Germany the political
situation was that the first
labour union was founded, this
links with the piece as labour is
used to create the trees
(lumberjack).
Does the work relate to other
areas of knowledge, such as
science or geography?
The type of wood used to form
the tree was from a felled tree.

How does this work link to your exam theme of Apart and or Together?
The thin and the thick tree look like husband and wife, this makes me think that its
together and the natural world was from the tree aspect. The theme of family makes me
feel comfortable when Im with the sculpture. The age of the wood could show the never
ending bond between dead couples.
