Kenya was initially colonized by Arab traders in the late 1800s, but Britain gained control in the early 1900s by establishing the Imperial British East Africa Company. Britain ruled Kenya by dividing it into districts to separate the British from Kenyans, taking land from Kenyans to create large white plantations. This imperialism negatively impacted Kenyans by eliminating their traditional leaders and forcing them to adapt to British ways. Kenyans resisted through the Mau Mau uprising from 1952-1960 and gained independence in 1961 after a war between Africans and British caused Britain to grant Kenyans free elections and full control over the country.
