Short History Of Kenya


Kenya has been considered the Cradle of Mankind. The
place where the first humans appeared on Earth. There are fossils
found in the eastern and western parts of Kenya. Back then, the
Masai were the dominant tribe of Kenya. They arrived from the
north, around the mid 18th century. They werent the largest tribe
in Kenya, but there warriors had a successful reputation. Which
gave them the power to overthrow all the other tribes.

When was Kenya Imperialized?


From the late 1800s to the mid 1900s

Who Imperialized Kenya ?


First, it was the Arabs. But, they had only come
to trade.
Then, the European Countries(Britain) came to
claim it.

How did Britain gain control of Kenya ?


Kenya had little power and money compared to
Britain.
There was a big size difference between Kenya
and Britain.
Britain gained control of Africa through the
Imperial British East Africa Company

What Resources did Kenya Have ?


Fertile Highlands- Which gave way To Uganda
( a strategic source to the Nile River)
Cotton
Tea
Coffee
Timber

How was your country ruled? What kinds of policies and laws
did the European power enact in your country?

To establish a clear difference of rights between


British and the Kenyans, the British authorities of
Kenya divided the country into independent
districts. This separated the British from the
Kenyans . Also, The British took land from the
Kenyans and created large white plantations for
themselves. Making it unfair for Kenyans .

What effects did imperialism have on the people of your country?

The British got rid of the Traditional Leaders and


appointed new ones. Kenyans could no longer
follow by their leaders and follow by what they had
already believed in. They now had to follow and
adapt by the British ways.

How did the people of your country resist


imperialism?
There was an organized peasant uprising called the MAU
MAU, which happened in Kenya from 1952 to 1960.

When did you country gain independence? How?


The Kenya African Union was formed to help Kenya gain
freedom. In 1952, there was a four year conflict/war between the
Africans and the British( Mau Mau Rebellion). This gave Kenya
more independence. In 1961, Africans were killed by white
guards, this caused a scandal that ended up with Britain giving
up control of Kenya. This gave Kenyans free election power,
which ended up with them becoming fully independent.
