PASTORS CORNER
Father Sebastian

Next Sunday is Palm Sunday. So, this is the last week of

Lent. Our Readings have been chosen to explain to us that
God wants to save all of us and will make changes n His
plans, to help us achieve eternal salvation.
Jeremiah says that the Law will not be written on stones or
on paper, but the Lord write the laws in the hearts of men
and women. What a powerful statement! God is no more
far away. He is in the midst of us. He is indeed within us.
Christ is the person who represents mankind and presents
Himself to the Father, as the One human being, obedient
and deserving of Heaven, through His Passion and Death.
Thus He paves the way for the rest of us.
Saint John writes in his Gospel, an imagery that Jesus
shared with His Apostles during His Ministry. Unless a
grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it cannot bear
any fruit.
While all of us shun pain and misery, hunger and thirst,
Jesus embraced these as a means to reconcile the world to
the Father. Sacrifice is the best form of Love. The Law
demands Justice. But Love demands mercy and
compassion.
The New Covenant is written in our hearts and the heart is
universally accepted as the seat of love and mercy. By
sharing in our pains and sorrows and embracing them,
Jesus shows us the way to a new covenant with God, which
cannot be broken. Christians are called to take up their
crosses and follow Jesus and not to seek comfort and
pleasure. Fr Sebastian

SAINT CATHERINE OF SWEDEN

March 24
mSaint Catherine of Sweden was born a princess
and daughter of Saint Bridget of Sweden. She
was a married woman who, with her husband,
took a vow of continence. In 1348, she went to
Rome to join her mother and for the next
twenty-five years the two women used that
city as a base for pilgrimages to a variety of
places, including Jerusalem. When not on
pilgrimage, they spent their days in prayer and
meditation and in working with the poor and
instructing them in religion. After the trip to
Jerusalem, Bridget died, and Catherine took
her mother's body back to Sweden, burying it
at Vadstena, in the convent of the Order of the
Holy Savior, which Bridget had founded.
Catherine became superior of the order and
died on March 24, 1381, mourned like her
mother by the whole of Sweden.

In our desire to trust

God and follow Jesus
wherever he leads us,
it's not a sin to feel
troubled about it.
Yes, we do have to be
willing to lose our
lives (i.e., our own
agendas, our own desires, our own ideas on what
we should do with our time,
etc.) so that we can unite
ourselves to Christ and his
mission. However, we don't
have to like the loss.
The Gospel reading shows
us that Jesus felt troubled by
the sacrifices he would have
to make. Yes, even Jesus
himself felt troubled! And the
Father glorified him.

Jesus came to earth to reFriday March 27

us, so that Jesus can lead
John 11:45-56
them to heaven. That is the
mission, the purpose of being Church, for all of us
laity as well as clergy.
The Sacrament of Baptism initiates us into this calling.
Confirmation commissions us to do it. Confession enables us to do it better. Marriage and Holy Orders give
us a venue for perfecting it. The Anointing of the Sick
converts our illnesses into opportunities to bear witness to Christ's Passion. And the Eucharist unites us
so fully to the Passion of Christ that we become what
we are called to do.

This is our everyday

ministry of evangelization: We love others as Jesus loves
them, we do for
them what Jesus
would like to do for
them,
and
we
spread the good
news about this as
a continuation of the
ministry of Jesus.
Often, this involves making sacrifices and doing good to those who reject us and scourge us and crucify
us or in any other way cause us to
suffer. This is our unity with Christ,
our Passion. We're not supposed to
like it, but we are supposed to do it.
The Father honors us for this. Just
like he glorified Jesus, he honors us
with his compassion, his rewards,
and his approval.
It's okay to feel troubled by the challenges we face in our mission. What
keeps us going is knowing that God
is raising us up. There is always
resurrection after crucifixion.

Reflect & Discuss:

1. What troubles are you facing?
Where is Jesus in this? Is he
ahead of you, leading the way?
Are you are following him?
2. How do you feel hearing Jesus
admit, "I am troubled now"?
3. When you make sacrifices for
others, how does this connect
you more closely to the human
heart of Jesus?
4. How does the Father honor you
as you serve in Christ's mission?

HFCA NEWS
EIGHTH GRADE RETREAT
A spiritual retreat for Holy Family
Academys eighth graders began the
evening of March 11 with a baked spaghetti
dinner held in the schools cafeteria and
continued throughout the following school
day. Led by Mrs. Mary Essig-Morrow, the
schools Assistant Principal and Counselor,
the 43 students connected with each other
through prayer, reflections, activities, and
fellowship to gain insight about themselves
and their classmates as they prepare for
high school in just a few short months.
Fr. Sebastian was on hand to speak to the
8th graders about the importance of
relationshipstheirs with God and with
others. The students enjoyed his candor
and his witty sense of humor on the
topic. Leaving the safe confines of HFCA
for high schools on island and elsewhere is
the next step in their journeys as young
adults.

SACRAMENTAL STUDENTS
A total of 56 sacramental students from the parish Religious Education classes and
Holy Family Catholic Academy met on Saturday morning, March 14th, to celebrate
the sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. Our Pastor, Fr. Sebastian, heard
the youngsters individual confessions assuring them of Gods loving forgiveness
for their sins. Lighting a special remembrance candle and saying their penance at
the altar accompanied by family members was a grace-filled moment for each
child.

RCIA. All the RCIA candidates are getting ready for the final week of
preparation before their Baptism on Easter Vigil. We pray that the
Holy Spirit fill them with His Peace and Joy.
BAPTISM of Infants and older children will take place on Easter
Sunday after the 8.30 Mass. Classes for parents and God-parents will
be done this Sunday after the 8.30 Mass.
