    Benjamin Franklin was born in 1706 in Boston and was one of 17 children. He learned the printing business at age 12 and became famous for printing Poor Richard's Almanack and The Pennsylvania Gazette. Franklin made many important contributions including inventing the lightning rod, bifocals, and the Franklin stove. He also established the first fire department and helped draft the Declaration of Independence. Franklin conducted his famous kite experiment in 1752 which proved that lightning was electricity. He died in 1790 after a life devoted to science, politics and public service.
