Niche Target Audience By using the

phrase Birminghams only I attracted

my audience by creating a sense of
exclusivity, as this is the only magazine
they can purchase to get information on
bands of the genre. This is an extremely
useful marketing trick used by
distributors in the magazine industry in
real life. By showing the audience this is
one of a kind, they feel compelled to buy

The price of my
magazine would also play
a key role in marketing
the product. Even
potential buyers that fit
into the niche genre
would be put off buying it
if the price was too large,
but would be equally put
off if it was too cheap. I
priced the magazine at
2.20, which ensures an
edge over competition,
which is usually slightly
more expensive, whilst
not alienating people and
ensuring the product
appears to reflect the
quality a professional

My use of colour scheme was another

important way of attracting my
audience as the juxtaposition of
darkness from the image with the
light of the masthead and cover lines
draws the eye to the magazine, and
this sort of contrast appeals to fans
of punk and post punk, as contrast,
especially of colour is a staple of the
genres.

How did you attract your

audience?

The language used within the

magazine is also largely informal and
aimed to directly address the
audience through the use of
declaratives, which give the reader a
call to action to buy the magazine.
This is utilised my many different
magazines, especially NME, which
was a big influence on my magazine
due to its similar genre and target
audience.

The layout of my front cover

was useful in appealing to the
audience as it was set to ease
reading by following the
convention of placing features in
a z formation, as most people
read in this shape, starting with
the top right hand corner and
finishing in the bottom left. This
allowed me to strategically
place the features of my cover

The coverlines of my magazine

feature already established acts as
well as up and coming artists. This
creates a sense that the magazine is
on top of the news, reporting on all
the bands that matter, again adding
to the exclusivity that the magazine
appears to have. The bands and
artists themselves will also attract
the audience, appealing to the age
range of my target audience by
featuring a balance of bands that are
relatively new and bands that are
much older, such as John Cooper
Clarke, who has been active since the
early 1970s.
