organic foods from nearby
Vehicles often use recycled
oil instead of using new oil
sources
Turning out the lights
after leaving the room,
and letting natural air in
are great ways to
conserve
energy

Gaylord Nelson
noticed it
After realizing the trees were being cut
down, Senator Nelson took action at
once. As he went to Washington D.C, he
tried his hardest to make a change. This
lead to him making Earth Day, first
celebrated in 1970. Although he died in
2005, his efforts still have value.

caught the attention of scientists?

The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970


Gaylord Nelson originally tried to tell
president John F. Kennedy about this
problem, yet the other senators showed no
concern.
Nelson was able to obtain the Medal of
Freedom in 1995
The original idea Nelson had was to teach
people about the environment.
o This caused more than 20,000,000
people walk the streets instead of drive.
The first Earth Day was celebrated towards
the Vietnam Wars end.
