What is the
Environmental
Movement?
● In the 1960s and 1970s, the environmental
movement focused its attention on pollution
and successfully pressured Congress to
pass measures to promote cleaner air and
water.
● The movement was led by senator, Gaylord
Nelson, who was the founder of Earth Day.
- His goal is to protect natural resources,
clean up waterways, and create green jobs.
(such as Environmental technician,
Recycling worker, etc.)
● Their main purpose is sought to reduce
pollution and pressure Congress to pass
measures to promote cleaner air and water.
Major Organizations
Sierra Club
● Founder: John Muir
○ Founded in 1892; Oakland, California
● Leader during the 1960’s: Edgar Wayburn
○ Preserved the amount of land in the Bay Area wild
○ Expanded Mt. Tamalpais State Park from 870 acres to more
than 6,000 acres
● Promotes environmental conservation
● Office opened in Washington D.C (1963)
● Adams Ansel: A landscape photographer whose photos brought
popularity to the Sierra Club during the 1960’s
The Wilderness
Society
● Founders: Aldo Leopold, Robert Marshall, Robert
Sterling Yard, Benton MacKaye, Ernest Oberholtzer,
Harvey Broome, Bernard Frank and Harold C.
Anderson
● Goals: Rights for clean air, water, and access to
natural resources for everyone.
● Responsible for the passage of the Wilderness Act
(1964)
● Wilderness Society council member Mardy Murie does
a decade long campaign to protect Alaska Wildlands
○ President Jimmy Carter appoints 15 national
monuments in Alaska
■ Under Antiquities Act, which defends
wildlands when Congress can’t
Laws Passed
● Wilderness Act (1964): Law passed by Congress
which protected and secured certain lands and
to secure the land and benefits of wilderness
○ Basically protects and secures forests
and other lands of nature.
● Clean Air Act (1977): Established federal
standards for sources of air pollution, it’s fuels,
and sources of the 187 hazardous air
pollution.
● Antiquities Act: Allows preserved wildlands to
be protected when Congress can’t

Aftermath
In December 1970, Congress created the
Environmental Protection Agency and passed
legislation, aimed at cleaning air, water, and
other natural resources.

An agency established by the executive
order of President Nixon whose mission is
to protect human and environmental
health.
