The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, founded in 1970 in New York City consists of thousands of progressive women of African
American descent who represent 59 chapters in 25 states and the District of Columbia and whose commitment to gender equity and
socioeconomic advancement drives meaningful change to benefit women and girls of color. Its membership includes a diverse group of women,
who are physicians, attorneys, educators, journalists, accountants, Municipal Court Judges, private entrepreneurs, university administrators,
corporate managers and vice presidents, artists, media personalities, labor leaders, public relations specialists, consultants, and elected officials.
This cross-section of dynamic, progressive women is reflective of the membership in each chapter of the national coalition. Its mission is to
advocate on behalf of women and girls through national and local actions and strategic alliances that promote the NC100BW agenda on
leadership development and gender equity in health, education and economic empowerment. To address the diverse needs of the community, the
NC100BW has developed and implemented many advocacy and empowerment programs to benefit the community.
The initial interest group for the Columbia Chapter was convened at Benedict College in February 2012 by Mary Miller McClellan, the Columbia
Chapters organizer and former member of the Long Island, New York Chapter and was chartered by the New York Corporate Office of the
NC100BW, Inc. at the Columbia Marriott Hotel in March 2014.
