One-on-One 101: Foundations of Counseling

Course Description:
Isaiah 1:17
commands us to

Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the

cause of orphans. Fight for the rights of widows.
As Christians we are called to minister
to the broken hearted people of this world. The students involved in this class will be
taught the basics of one-on-one conversation with the broken hearted. They will learn
basic skills for informal counseling such as the symptoms and reactions of a broken
person, the correct and incorrect things to say, how to listen and make the person feel
welcome, how to establish good relationships, and how to present Christ to a
non-Christian person.

Course Format:
The format of this class will be very relaxed. There will not be a grade; however, the
students will only get out of the class what they desire to learn. The class will include
basic lessons adapted from Light Universitys
Crisis Pregnancy Curriculum
as well as
lessons taught by guest speakers including
Jarrod Sechler, Susan Margolis
and

Janet
Mylin.
Classes will be held on the following dates after school from
3:30 to 4:30

18th, 24th, 27th
March:
4th, 6th, 16th, 25th, 27th

Course Goals:
By the end of this course it is intended that the students will be able to:
1. Have a basic knowledge of how to speak to a broken person.
2.
Understand the difference between helpful and unhelpful questions and, how

to use this questions to better clarify others feelings.

3. Recognize and respond to broken people, in a loving, Christ-like way.
4.
Communicate empathy and compassion in order create a safe and
comfortable environment for those they are speaking with
.
5. Establish relationships quickly as well as how to present the gospel in the best
way for their listeners to respond to.
* All of the lessons taught will also be put into practice during volunteering
opportunities throughout various ministries in State College.
