Lesson Topic: Social and Cultural Trends
Purpose:

The purpose of this lesson is to introduce students to the idea of


consumerism and how it changed the American lifestyle. Also this lesson will
cover the introduction of entertainment into Americans lives, and the
development of mass culture.
Background:

This lesson will serve to inform students about the beginnings of our
shopping habits that exist today, and also to show them when the past times
we enjoy today began.
INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES/ STUDENT OUTCOMES:

Students will be able to explain how new types of stores and


marketing changed American Life.
Students will analyze the ways in which Americans developed a mass
culture.
Students will describe the new forms of popular entertainment.
Big Ideas:

Americans become consumers.


Advertising attracting customers.
Mass culture.
Literature and Arts flourish, Educational Developments, and increase
in newspaper circulation.
New forms of entertainment (e.g. Amusement Parks, Circus,
Vaudevilles, and Sports).

What is consumerism?
What luxuries did the middle class begin to enjoy?
How does advertising attract customers?
What is mass culture?
Why do you think circulation of newspapers increased?

What types of entertainment do you think began to emerge in this


period?

Themes:

Theme #1: Culture. This lesson will examine the changes in


Americans buying habits as a result of new types of stores and
advertising which had led to the consumerist culture that still exists
within our society.
Theme #4: Individual Development and Identity. This lesson will
serve to introduce students to how advertising, mass culture serve
to socialize individuals and groups which can unknowingly develop a
certain type of individuals with a certain type of cultural identity.
(e.g. consumers, materialists)

Pass out the graphic organizer. Explain the layout, and the types of answers I
am expecting

Students will be using the textbook to retrieve the information necessary to
fill out the organizer
I will be restating objectives of the lesson, and restating the specific types of
answers I want
I will be checking for understanding, on task behavior, and addressing any
questions or needs
Closure:

Students will return to their assigned seats
