Lesson Plan 2
Fraction Pies
Grade Level: 2
Subject: Mathematics

Topic: Fractions

Standards:
2.G.A.3
Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the
words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds,
four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.
Objective: SWBAT represent basic fractions with the use of a fraction pie. SWBAT represent
simple fractions by shading the section of a shape that represents the correct portion of the
whole. SWBAT match the number representation of a fraction with the picture representation of
a fraction.
Procedure:
1. The teacher will begin the introduction of fractions by asking the students, Can you
think of anything that is a whole piece that you might want to divide into pieces? Have
them turn and talk to a partner, then call on a few to give examples and discuss everyday
fractions, (i.e. pizza).
2. Read the book Jump Kangaroo Jump, pausing on several pages to ask about the
fraction of the whole represented on that page and have students model those fractions on
the fraction pie.
3. Have the students break into their math groups and each student create their own
fraction pie.
4. The students will each receive two paper plates.
5. Instruct the students to color one paper plate completely with one color.
6. The second plate will be cut in half and then each of those halves will be cut in half to
create 4 equal parts.
7. The 4 parts will be attached to the center of the whole plate using a button closure so the
pieces can easily be moved.
8. Once all of the fraction pies are completed, the teacher will ask the students to use the
fraction pie to show , , , and a whole.
9. After the students have had some time to practice with the teacher and with their math
groups, they will then complete a worksheet using their fraction pies.
10. Once all students have completed the worksheet. The teacher will ask the students to
cooperate to split the class into two halves, then into quarters, then into three quarters and
one quarter. This should be a group activity, where the students work together to find a

solution. The teacher should only provide limited guidance if the students are struggling
to split the class into fractions properly.
Assessment:
1. The teacher will be able to assess the students through their answers given on the
worksheets and by informal assessment observing the closure activity.
