Admixtures

(C)10.5.1
The use of admixtures in concrete may be approved by the Engineer at no
extra cost to the Contract to meet special circumstances or conditions. In this case the
concrete will be described as a special concrete and its use will be strictly limited to the
special circumstances or conditions for which it is approved.
(C)10.5.2

All admixtures shall conform to BS 5075 or equivalent ASTM C494M.

Admixtures shall not impair the durability of the concrete nor combine with the constituents
to form harmful compounds nor increase the risk of corrosion of the reinforcement. Calcium
chloride shall not be used. Chloride and sulphate contents in admixtures shall be stated by the
manufacturer and taken into account when checking the total limits of the mix.
If two or more admixtures are to be used in the same concrete mix, data shall be obtained and
documentation submitted by the manufacturer to assess their interaction and to ensure their
compatibility.
