Water Weight

Bernadette Rozzi

Rationale
Diaper manufacturers make many claims about their
products. The question is do any of them live up to their
promise of drier baby bottoms?
1) I noticed that my baby sister seemed to leak more
often with some diapers than other diapers.
2) Are more expensive diapers worth the cost?

Investigative Question
Which brand of diaper will hold the most
water?

Hypothesis
I think the brand A will hold the most water
because it says it has an ultra leakguard.

Variables
Independent variable:
The brand of diaper.
Dependant variable:
Measuring the mass of water being absorbed.

Control
There were no controls needed for this
experiment.

Materials Needed (in detail - metric units)

1.Water
2.Scale
3.Brand A,B,C,D,E all in size 3
A-Luvs
E-Target
B-Comforts
C-Huggies
D-Pampers

Procedure (numbered, step-by-step)

7.

Weigh the dry diaper

Put the diaper in a bucket of water
Lift the diaper out of water
Let drip dry for 15 seconds
Weigh the wet diaper
Discard diaper
Repeat

Results
In all the trials brand A retained the most water and brand D
retained the least amount of water.

Conclusion
Is your conclusion supported by your results?
As predicted ultra leakguard found in brand A made a difference.
Did you prove or disprove your hypothesis?
I proved my hypothesis because I said brand A would retain the most water.
Is there a relationship between the independent and dependent variable and do you state it?
There was no relationship between the independent and dependent variable.
Did you summarize and evaluate your experimental procedure?
I Bought several brands of diapers that I weighed dry and then soaked them in water for 1 minute
and weighed again wet to determine the mass.

Next Time/Future Considerations

What would you do differently?
I would make the water temperature the
same.
What other variables could you explore?
I would measure other size diapers other than
size 3 in mass and volume.

Acknowledgments
I want to thank my baby sister for giving me
the idea and my mom and dad for helping me
through the experimentation.
