Lesson: Background and Vocab

Lesson Objective: For students to gain background information on the


piece of writing that they will be reading in class the following day. Students
will also learn ten potentially new vocabulary words that are found in the
text.
Materials:
- And of Clay Are We Created vocabulary terms
- How Volcanoes Work, Nevado del Ruiz (1985) article http://www.geology.sdsu.edu/how_volcanoes_work/Nevado.html
- Vocabulary worksheet
- Vocabulary PowerPoint
Lesson Opening:
1) Transition students into the classroom
2) Activate background knowledge none; we are transitioning from
Beowulf to And of Clay Are We Created
3) Purpose of the lesson is to give you some background information on
and vocabulary found in And of Clay Are We Created.
Procedures:
1) Pass out How Volcanoes Work, Nevado del Ruiz (1985) article have
students get out a pen and a highlighter (if they have one or borrow
them one)
a. When we are reading, students need to Mark It Up like they did
with Beowulf
2) Ask for student volunteers to read every other passage of the article (I
will read the opposite sections)
a. Stop after each chunk to summarize and review vocab words
(ex: stratovolcano, subduction, etc.)
b. Ask students if they have any questions
c. Dont need to read the What Went Wrong students can read
that if they have extra time later
3) Whats the point of reading this article? Any thoughts? Student input
a. Background information this is the volcanic eruption that is the
basis for our next story that we will be reading tomorrow in Ms.
Huffs class
b. And of Clay Are We Created is realistic fiction what does that
mean? stories that could have actually occurred
4) Pass out vocabulary worksheets pull up PowerPoint slideshow
a. Students are to fill out definitions as we read them
b. Get student input for synonyms or if they have heard the words
before
5) Transition to Bonnie working with fiction terms
