Lesson: Oreo Moon Phases

Lesson Objective: Given Oreo cookies, students will be able to create the 8
phases of the Moon as a group of 3 using their prior knowledge. This will
serve as a review prior to the assessment.
Materials:
- Oreos (3 per student 84 cookies)
- Plastic knives (1 per student 28)
- Paper towels/ plates
- Hand sanitizer
- Oreo Moon Activity worksheet
Lesson Opening:
1) Transition students between classrooms
2) Activate background knowledge Review Moon phases
3) Purpose of the lesson is to review the Moon phases before our
assessment Thursday
Procedures:
1) Students at desks
2) Review phases of the Moon transition to Oreo activity
a. Put students in groups of three each student will receive 3
cookies
b. Each group will create 2 full Moons starting & ending with a Full
Moon
c. Divide up the moon phases between the 3 members of your
groups
i. 3 X3 = ? (everybody) student explain what this means
3) Students line up to get their materials (3 cookies, 1 napkin/ plate, and
a knife)
4) Have to show teacher before they can be done
a. When finished they need to get a worksheet before they can eat
their Oreos
Assessment:
- Students will turn in the Oreo Moon Activity worksheet
