 Social Studies notebooks
 Digital book
 Thomas Jefferson reading passage
 Highlighters
 Pencils
 Document Camera
 Glue sticks
Integration of technology: Technology will be used to project the master copy of the Social Studies on
the smart board.

Alternative Plan: If technology fails the students can follow along with the copies that are in their
notebooks.

Anticipatory Set (Hook & Agenda): Call and response with the students about what they might know 5
about Thomas Jefferson. minutes

Access/Review Prior Knowledge: Talk about the information that they have brought up about Thomas
Jefferson and connect it to what has previously been learned about Thomas Jefferson.
Teaching Process & Modeling (Content is presented, accessed, or built): Talk about Thomas Jefferson
in that he was born in Virginia and lived in Monticello, which is close by. Talk about his contributions
as a Famous American such as being the third president of the United States and being one of the
authors of the Declaration of Independence. Then read the digital book about Thomas Jefferson.

Go over the concepts that are read in the book.

Guided Practice & Checking for Understanding: Then pass out the reading passage and have the
students read the passage and highlight the important information about Thomas Jefferson. Once it
appears that students are finished. Have them raise their hands to see what they have highlighted.

Independent Practice: Then pass out the timeline that corresponds with the passage and have them
fill it out accordingly.

Closure: As they finish they can turn it into the basket.

Declarative Statement Summary: “Today we learned about the third president of the United States,
Thomas Jefferson.”
