V: Teaching Procedures:
A. Introduction (Anticipatory Set)
In order to activate my students prior knowledge, I
will ask Please turn and talk with a neighbor about
one store that you really like. It can be a restaurant,
shopping store, grocery store, electronic store,
anything! Tell your friend why you like this store.
What does it have there? Why are you attracted to
that specific place?
Allow the students to talk for 2-3 minutes.
Gather the group together again and ask for some
volunteers to share. Have the students give the full
explanation of the store.
A. Input
Begin this section of the lesson by sharing about my
favorite store - Valley Forge Running Company:
o I Love VFRC because I enjoy running. Every
time I walk into the store, it gives me a sense
of motivation. I am ecstatic. Inside the store
there are running shoes everywhere. There is
an indoor track for you to practice running on
with a pair of sneakers you may buy. There are
running clothes like under armor leggings and
Mizuno tank tops! This store sells running
guides and magazines. The store has posters
for upcoming races and marathons. The store
workers are really helpful and help you choose
the right pair of sneakers. If I could own my
own business, I would want it to be just like this
running store.
Next, introduce the book Better Than a Lemonade
Stand by Daryl Bernstein.
Explain to the students that in this book it outlines
how to create your own business! It outlines factors
that you need to think about when deciding what
type of business to open.
Do not read every word. Just out line the headings:
o Choosing a business
o Supplies
o Location

o Agreements
o Advertising
o Success

Go through the book and pull out a few examples of

small businesses
o Landscapers
o Car Wash
o Babysitting (in home)
o Now, brainstorm with the kids some of the
tools the students would need to create these
three businesses.
o Make a chart on the board and fill in under
each category.
B. Practice (Guided/Independent)
Inform the students that they will be creating their
own business!!!!
The objective is to create a business in any town that
they would like. It can be any type of business, but
there must be a rationale as to why they want to
create this specific business.
The student must create an add for the business.
o What will be sold in this store?
o Where will it be located?
o What type of deal/sales does the store offer?
o What are the hours?
o Be creative!!!!
Next, the students must create a picture to go along
with their add. What type of features will draw
customers in that have never heard of you? Will it be
in a strip mall? A city? A small town? Provide details
in the picture!
Allow students to crayons, colored pencils, rulers,
and construction paper.
This is an independent project.
The students may use the book to help create ideas
for their business, but they may not copy the book
word for word. It must be original ideas.
C. Differentiation
Differentiation In order to ensure that each
student is satisfied with the ability to create their
own company, students may create a radio add using
the voice recorder on the computer in place of
writing an ad for their business.

D. Closure
At the end of the lesson, students will get gather into
their base groups and they will share their business
idea.
The students will be asked to sell their business.
The students are expected to give descriptive details
and include strong selling points (appropriate for 3 rd
graders).
Once the summative assessment (see below) is
complete, we will hang our businesses outside of our
classroom.
On parents night, we will have a Small Business
Fashion Show for our new company! We will dress
the part and learn how to present themselves as
professionals!

IX: Reflection:
I believe that this idea is really fun and creative for students! As
a learner, I am hands on and like to create things. This type of
lesson will target students who are strong using art and writing
skills. This lesson can be modified to benefit each student in his
or her own way. I feel like giving the students freedom to choose
their own type of business to create allows for personal
opportunities. Having the parents coming to see the gallery will
help motivate students to do their best work. Overall, this is a
fun activity that all students can participate in.
