Research Sub- Question

How will I gather evidence of units or lessons
that will affect the students achievement in
learning the standards?

How will I use this information to decide

which method will benefit the students
learning?

Article Summary-Classroom
Assessment Amidst Cultural and
Linguistic Diversity
Maria is trying to decide whether she should buy a weekly
bus pass. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, she rides the
bus to and from work. On Tuesday and Thursday, she rides
the bus to work but gets a ride home with her friends.
Should Maria buy a weekly bus pass based on the following
fare information? One way $1.oo and weekly pass $9.00.
Many of the students chose the weekly pass, while the
teacher considered the daily fare to more economical. The
teacher began to discuss why they came up with this
conclusion. Those that selected the weekly pass argued that
it would allow family members to use it after work and on
weekends.

Cont. from Article-What has

changed in assessment
practices for students?
VERY LITTLE!!!! In the past 50 years very little.
It has become increasingly standardized, norm
referenced, and institutionalized
These test have made teachers: 1. to narrow
curriculum taught in classrooms 2. limit and
negatively affect the quality of content area
instruction 3. Encourage so-called teaching to
the test 4. Push students out of the system.
And 5. Divert classroom instruction to an
emphasis on low-level content and basic skills

Reflection on Data
I was hired at Colonial Heights two years ago
and when I mentioned that I work there I was
told that I was at low and difficult school.
What makes a school difficult to work at? Is it
the population? After analyzing the data
regarding my site compare to the district, I
can come up with my theories but how do I
change the mindset of my students? What
type of assessment do I give these students?

These are examples of POWs. POWs are

great to check for understanding of the
concepts. From the rubric one can see that
students need to be detailed when answering
them. In common core students need to be
able to explain how were able to solve
particular problems.

this particular assessment the problems are
not open-ended. We are checking if students
are able to properly use the Pythagorean

If you compare the work of the high to the

low you can notice that in the high the
student have pictures and explanation of the

Your mother has accelerated onto the interstate beginning a long road trip
and you notice that the low fuel light is on, indicating that there is a half a
gallon left in the gas tank. The nearest gas station is 26 miles away. Your
mother keeps a log where she records the mileage and the number of
gallons purchased each time she fills up the tank. Use the information in
the table below to determine whether you will make it to the gas station
before the gas runs out. You know that if you can determine the amount
of gas that her car consumes in a particular number of miles, then you
can determine whether or not you can make it to the next gas station.

Some of my students did not remember what

you do mathematically to find the unit rate.
Other knew that equation k=y/x but didn'tt
know what number was the x or the y
While other knew to how to set it up but
couldnt reduce the fraction

I think that I would need to front load with
transformations activities so we could review.

We must remember that mathematics is a
subject that builds on itself. If students dont
have a strong foundation they will struggle in
the upper grades.
Vocabulary is a must, many students will say
show me and I can do it but if the read the
directions at they struggle.

Answering my
sub-question
I will need to analysis lessons to see if there
are holes and what the students are having
difficulty on.
Throughout lessons I need to do quick check
for understanding.
When necessary I might need to reteach if
assessments show that students did not
grasp the concepts.
