ME4413 Heat and Mass Transfer Homework 4

Due date: 16 April 2015
1. A counter-flow heat exchanger is stated to have an overall heat tranfer coefficient
of 284 W/m2K when operating at design and clean conditions. Hot fluid enters the
tube side at 93C and exits at 71C, while cold fluid enters the shell side at 27C
and exits at 38C. After a period of use, built-up scale in the heat exchanger gives
a fouling factor of 0.0004 m2K/W. Assume both hot and cold fluids have a
specific heat of 4200 J/kgK. If the surface area is 93 m2, determine
(a) the rate of heat transfer in the heat exchanger;
(15 marks)
(b) the mass flow rates of both hot and cold fluids.

2. Hot oil is cooled by water in a heat exchanger with one-shell pass and 12-tube
passes whose overall heat transfer coefficient is 200 W/m2C. The heat transfer
surface area of the heat exchanger is 4 m2. The specific heat and flow rate of the
oil flowing inside the shell are cph = 2200 J/kgC and h = 0.4 kg/s, respectively,
and the inlet temperature of oil is 165C. The specific heat and flow rate of the
water flowing inside the tube are cpc =4180 J/kgKC and c = 0.1 kg/s,
respectively, and the inlet temperature of water is 25C. Determine the outlet
temperatures of the oil and water, respectively.
