MEC503 - Heat transfer assignment TE Mech SEM-V Date-30/09/2019

1.In a food processing plant a water is to be cooled 18oC to 6.5oC by using brine solution
entering at a temperature of -1.1oC and leaves at 2.9oC. What area is required for a shell and
tube heat exchanger with water making one shell pass and brine making two tube pass.
Assume overall heat transfer coefficient to be 850 W/m2 oC and heat load 6kW.

2.The effectiveness of a counterflow heat exchanger is 0.7 and heat transfer area is 1.5 m2.
Find rate of heat transfer if cold fluid temperature rise is 30oC and hot fluid temperature drop is
40oC. Assume both fluids are unmixed and use analytical method. Also find LMTD of heat
exchanger if overall heat transfer coefficient is 50 W/m2 oC.

3.A parallel flow heat exchanger has hot and cold water streams. Mass flow rate of hot fluid is
11 kg/min and cold fluid is 26 kg/min.Inlet temperatures of hot and cold fluid are 75oC and 25oC.
Outlet temperature of hot fluid is 50oC.Individual heat transfer coefficient on both sides is 62
W/m2oC. Calculate-Area. Also the outlet temperature of hot and cold fluids if the hot fluid flow
rate is doubled.

4. In a counterflow heat exchanger, heat capacity ratio is 1 and temperature of hot fluid at inlet is
90oC and temperature of cold fluid at outlet is 60oC. Inlet temperature of cold fluid is 20oC
Calculate it’s LMTD and effectiveness,
