Analysis: Authentic Assessment refers to assessments that require higherorder thinking skills and relate knowledge to real world situations. These are
not the typical traditional approaches to testing. Instead of multiple choice
or matching; students are asked to produce something with the information
they have acquired. They are learning and practicing how to apply new
information and skills to authentic purposes. The learning has meaning and
makes connections to real-life situations. This type of assessment focuses on
the thinking behind the work. There are many ways to implement authentic
assessment. Some are: conducting research, doing projects, writing letters,
keeping journals, book discussions, solving real life math problems, and
presentations. All of these assessments require students to demonstrate
their knowledge, skills, and strategies and apply them to authentic purposes.
Authentic assessment provides students with opportunities to showcase their
skills, knowledge, and creativity. It also displays their understanding of the
information and why it is useful. Authentic assessment supports the
improvement of learning in the classroom.

Planning: I use a variety of assessments in my classroom. Some are

traditional and some are authentic. I prefer authentic assessments because
students must generate information that shows a clear understanding and
connection to real life experiences. In the future, I would like to collaborate
with colleagues, engage in workshops, and keep up on current educational
material that will aid me with authentic assessment. I always want to
connect what I am teaching to real life. I want students to understand that
there is a purpose for what they are learning.
