Nicholas II-Continued the tradition of autocracy

Rasputin-A holy man claiming to have magical powers. Helped czars son
with hemophilia, was granted with some political power. Was later murdered by
nobles.
Industrialization and growth of Revolutionary movements
Bolsheviks-Radicals that would sacrifice anything to get
change in the revolution, V.I. Lenin was the leader of this group.
Mensheviks-Moderate revolutionary group that wanted a
broad base for popular support for the revolution
Soviets-Local council consisting of workers, peasants, and
soldiers.
Lenin-The father of the revolution. He planned to overthrow the czar
Revolution of 1905
Russo-Japanese War-War against japan in which russia failed
miserably. Showed people that there really needs to be change.
Bloody sunday-People protesting were killed. 700 killed, over
1,000 injured
WWI-Nicholas II brought Russia to war. More than 4 mil russian soldiers
were killed. Russia was unstable for war and resources were dwineling.
Two revolutions:
March Revolution - Provisional Government-Alexander KerenskyProtesters marched the streets because a lack of bread and fuel. Protesters
were shot but guards soon sided with them. The protest soon turned into a
full scale uprising. Alexander became head of the Provisional government
and kept Russia in WWI. Lenin is brought back to Russia to help fuel the
uproar.
November Revolution-also known as Bolshevik Revolution?-Out
of nowhere armed factory workers storm the Winter palace and called
themselves the red army. Leaders of the provisional government were
arrested.

Treaty of Brest-Litovsk-unilateral treaty with Germany-After the Bolsheviks took
over they signed a treaty to halt all fighting with germany. By doing this they
needed to give up some land.
Trotsky-Was running against Stalin for dictatorship of russia. He was exiled
before elections and couldnt run.
Civil War
White Army - who made up this army?-Made up of many
different people with different wants for the government of russia.
Red Army - who made up this army?-Made up of factory
workers who took over the winter palace.
Problems?-The white armys sole purpose was to take down
the red armys rule in russia.
Results?-A very deadly battle between the two armies lasting
three years and killing over 14 mil people of Russia.
