Anticipatory Set: Talk about the book, Judy Moody is in a Mood. Ask students what club
she belonged to? How did she get in that club? What other groups was she part of?

First: Transition this discussion into groups that they are a part of. With elbow partners,
talk for one minute about which groups they belong to.
Brainstorm on the Smart Board all the groups/clubs we belong to in our class. The bigger
the list, the better to see all the examples of communities there are.
Next: Emphasize that the groups they belong to are all communities. Communities are
different groups or clubs that we belong to.
Take a second to think by yourself about why it is important to be a part of a community?
What would the world be like without communities?
Finally: On the sheet provided, return to your table and draw one of the communities that
you belong to. Write one sentence about your community. Model this on the board!
