Week Twelve – Tie together week for Ratios and Area
How are area and ratio connected?
Geogebra growing rectangles Graph ratios to see how they grow
Vocabulary connections – building word wall
- Three days
- List words (groups – whole class)
- Define on cards (groups) - Build as a class
Day one – How are area and ratios related?
Goal - Have kids figure out the connections between area and ratios Subordinated Tasks - Graphing Delivery - Table Groups for discussion, kids can work in partners when they begin graphing - Teacher: o Are area and ratios connected? Stand up if you definitely think they are Stand if you think maybe they could be but you’re not really sure how Stand up if they are not related at all o Post this picture
o What do you notice?
o If they bring up the area of the three rectangles, have them write them down in the boxes and look for patterns 4, 16, 36 o They may notice that the ratio of height to width is 1:4 o Project a blank graph paper on the board and draw the 1:4 rectangle on it, next, in a different colour, draw the 2x8 rectangle, then the 3x12 o Kids’ task today is to pick a ratio and graph as many rectangles on their graph paper as will fit. Here are some exemplars to show o Have students list their ratios across the top. o Some kids will want extra pages to tape together for wider rectangles
