Week Twelve – Tie together week for Ratios and Area

How are area and ratio connected?

Geogebra growing rectangles
Graph ratios to see how they grow

Vocabulary connections – building word wall

- Three days

- List words (groups – whole class)

- Define on cards (groups)
- Build as a class

Day one – How are area and ratios related?

Goal
- Have kids figure out the connections between area and ratios
Subordinated Tasks
- Graphing
Delivery
- Table Groups for discussion, kids can work in partners when they begin graphing
- Teacher:
o Are area and ratios connected?
 Stand up if you definitely think they are
 Stand if you think maybe they could be but you’re not really sure how
 Stand up if they are not related at all
o Post this picture

o What do you notice?

o If they bring up the area of the three rectangles, have them write them down in the
boxes and look for patterns 4, 16, 36
o They may notice that the ratio of height to width is 1:4
o Project a blank graph paper on the board and draw the 1:4 rectangle on it, next, in
a different colour, draw the 2x8 rectangle, then the 3x12
o Kids’ task today is to pick a ratio and graph as many rectangles on their graph
paper as will fit. Here are some exemplars to show
o Have students list their ratios across the top.
o Some kids will want extra pages to tape together for wider rectangles
