It is with great sadness we announce
the passing of our son, husband,
brother, uncle and great friend on
Thursday April 9, 2015 due to a tragic
accident getting ready to do something
he loved. Roy will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 10 years Jaime and
children Dallas, Dakota and Xni, father
and mother Art and Carleen Shumard,
sister Kareena (Paul), nephew Tyler and
niece Dani and too many friends &
family to name.
Roy was born in Merritt and made
his life in Merritt, touching many
along his way. He worked 15 years at
Tolko Mill and enjoyed quadding, fishing, camping, watching sports and
hunting. Roy enjoyed time with his
family and friends and loved to tease
and joke around.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, April 18, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the
Nicola Valley Memorial Arena.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society
as it was a cause close to his heart as it
effected those close to him.

of the Suzuki Foundations Blue Dot
movement. Environmental groups from

Peter was among 49 volunteers from

across Canada to receive the Governor
Generals Caring Canadian Award, yesterday morning, during a ceremony at
Rideau Hall. Created in 1995, the Caring
Canadian Award recognizes living Canadians and permanent residents who have
made a significant, sustained, unpaid
contribution to their community, in
Canada or abroad. Often working behind
the scenes, these individuals volunteer
their time and efforts to help their fellow
citizens. The award also brings to light
the example set by volunteers, whose
compassion and engagement are a part
of our Canadian character.
For the past 27 years, Peter Piara
Samra has been involved in several civic,
humanitarian, social and educational
causes in Merritt, notably with the City
of Merritt and Rotary Club programs, the
Nicola Valley and District Food Bank,
and Merritt Central School. He has promoted equality and youth involvement
as both a member and vice-president of
the Merritt Sikh Society and as an IndoCanadian liaison and volunteer in the
community. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the creation of the Caring
Canadian Award, created by the Right
Honourable Romo LeBlanc during his
term as GG and is part of National Volunteer Week, from April 12 to 18, 2015.

Amber Alert toddler

found in Merritt

Monday afternoon, police in Delta

cancelled an Amber Alert issued for an
18-month old girl, after she was found
with her father in Merritt, enroute presumably to Alberta. Police said Alysha
Lyle Valdes was found unharmed. Her
father, David Lyle, 31, was arrested. The
abduction occurred after a domestic custody incident between the parents.

that cute dress in the window?" The sales lady replied; "Sure, but wouldnt you be more comfortable in a dressing room?"
Rules Are Rules Hospital regulations require a wheel chair for patients being discharged. However, while working as a student aide, Sam found one elderly gentleman already dressed and
sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet, who insisted he didn't need Sam's help to leave
the hospital. After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let Sam wheel him to the elevator. On the way down Sam asked him if his wife was meeting him. "I don't know," he said.
"She is till upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown."
