Definition

Afloppy diskismagnetic storage medium. The floppy

disk is composed of a thin and flexible magnetic disk
sealed in a square plastic carrier.
In order to read and write data from a floppy disk, a
computer system must have a floppy disk drive (FDD).
A number of different types of floppy disks have been
developed. The size of the floppy got smaller, and the
storage capacity increased.
however, in the 1990s, other media, including hard disk
drives, ZIP drives, optical drives and USB flash drives,
started to replace floppy disks as the primary storage
medium.

Type of Floppy Disk

8-inch: The first floppy disks that came on the market
were 8 inches (200 mm) in diameter. It store about 1 MB of
data.
5-inch: This was quickly replaced by a 5 inch (133
mm) floppy , which stores the same amount of information
using higher-density media and recording techniques.
3-inch: In the early 1980s, the 3 inch (90 mm) floppy
or 'micro floppy' came on the market, and this type
became the dominant storage medium for personal
computers for many years.

Three different generations of floppy disk: 8 inch,

5.25 inch and 3.5 inch

Disk:
It use a thin plastic base material coated with iron
oxide. This oxide is aferromagnetic material,
meaning that if you expose it to a magnetic field
it is permanently magnetized by the field.
The tracks are arranged in concentric rings so
that the software can jump from "file 1" to "file
19" without having to fast forward through files 218.
The diskette spins like a record and the heads
move to the correct track, providing what is
known asdirect access storage. Both can
record information instantly.
It can be erased and reused many times.
It record information instantly.
