Task Sorting Activity

6th Grade Math Patterns, Algebraic Expression
My students will work in partners to complete a task in which they will be given a series or
sequence of numbers with a number (or two) missing. They will determine the missing
number(s) in the sequence by working to reveal the pattern. Students will then use the pattern to
create an algebraic expression that accurately articulates the pattern. Once an expression has
been ascertained, students will use the expression to find the 18th, 33rd, and 105th numbers in the
sequence (students will use xn where xn is the term and n is the number of the term to be found).

Task A: Look at the sequence/series of numbers. Determine the missing number(s) in the
sequence to reveal the pattern.
Task B: Use the pattern to create an algebraic expression to find other numbers in the sequence
Task C: Use the algebraic express you created to find the 18th, 33rd, and 105th number in the
sequence.
{Use Xn where Xn is the term and n is the term number: X5 would mean the 5th term. An example
would be X5 = 2n+ 3; 2(5) +3=10+3=13}
