Transformation

Project
For: Ms. Riveras
Fifth Grade Class

TEKS For 5th grade

O 5.8) Geometry and spatial reasoning. The student

models transformations. The student is expected to:

O (A) sketch the results of translations, rotations, and
reflections on a Quadrant I coordinate grid;
O and
O (B) identify the transformation that generates one
figure from the other when given two
O congruent figures on a Quadrant I coordinate grid.

What is transformation?
OTransformation is changing a

shape using
OSlide Translation

Lets break it down

Translation
O Translation : a motion of a plane that moves every

point of the plane a specific distance and direction

along a straight line and is not altered in any other
way.
O (Simply moving the shape)
To translate a shape two things must happen
1) All points must be moved the same distance.
2) All points must be moved the same direction

Reflection
O Reflection : in a line l is a transformation from the

plane to the plane that pairs each point P with a point

P in such a way that the l is the perpendicular bisector
of PP, as long as P is not on l. if P is on l, then P=P
O (An image as it would look in a mirror)
Two important notes:
1)Every point is the same distance from the central line.
2)The reflection has the same size as the original image.

Rotation
O Rotation : is a transformation of the plane

determined by holding one point -the center- fixed

and rotating the plane about this point by a certain
amount in a certain direction ( a certain number of
degrees either clockwise or counter clock wise)
O ( A circular movement)
Two important notes
1) Rotation has a central point that stays fixed as
everything else moves around that point in a circle.
2) A Full Rotation is 360 degrees
