Properties
Archimedes Bulk Volume and Porosity

Aim of the Experiment

To determine the bulk volume and porosity of a core plug sample by using
Archimedes principle.
Apparatus
Analytical balance
Core plug
Beaker
Water
Procedure
First we had to saturate the core sample using the equipment in the second
experiment we conducted with Negar. After that we simply had to take the weight of
the saturated core plug. After that we had to submerge the core sample in water,
and get the submerged weight of the sample, using the analytical balance. The
theory behind this part of the experiment was to zero the analytical balance when it
had the beaker full of water on it, then we suspended the core plug into the water
using a string. At this point the reading on the analytical balance showed the
buoyant force exerted by the water against the saturated core plug (the equal and
opposite reaction to the weight of the core plug).

The porosity we get from performing his experiment is the effective porosity since
the isolated pores wont be included in the pore volume that we found.

The calculations and equations we need are in the next section.

Measurements and Calculations
Equations:

V p=

W sat W dry
fluid

V m=

W dry W
fluid

W sat W dry
W sat W

Wsat = 109.60 g
Wdry = 90.12 g
Wsub = 54.23 g
fluid =1 g/cc
Calculations
Vp = 19.48 cc
Vm = 35.89 cc
Vb = 553.7 cc
= 0.352 x 100% = 35.2%
Results and Discussion

in this experiment, we learned how to measure the effective porosity of a rock which
is one of the most important parameters needed by a reservoir engineer in
analyzing reservoir rocks.
