Now that we have had our first tastes of the high school setting, we will be making a few
alterations, so that our classroom can run more smoothly. This handout is to keep you updated on
the new changes taking place within our classroom, and to remind you of the expectations for
this class. I know that some of you may love reading and writing, while others may struggle with
the subject. To those who may feel that they are struggling I will say this: Everyone struggles
with something, but that does not mean that we cannot learn together! In this class we are all a
team. All students and teachers should work together in an effort to benefit everyone in the room.
We hope to see another successful quarter with you all, and to finish out the semester strong!

Class Rules
1. Only 1 person may speak at a time, unless otherwise instructed. If you have a question or
comment while another person is speaking, please raise your hand and wait to be called
on.
2. Students will use positive and school-appropriate language
3. Students act and speak truthfully
4. Teacher will dismiss the students, NOT the bell

Consequences
Student consequences will follow due process, with the exception of extreme and dangerous
situations. These consequences will also be given consistently and without bias.

FIRST OFFENSE: Discreet verbal warning

SECOND OFFENSE: Call home
THIRD OFFENSE: Detention
FOURTH OFFENSE: Referral

Procedures
Beginning Class
When you enter class each day you should turn in any homework to the basket by the door. Next,
you should check the table by the windows for any handouts for the day. Check the whiteboards
for information on the days lesson. Once all work is turned in and the materials are picked up,
you should sit in your assigned seat and begin the days bell work. Bell work will be completed
on a single worksheet each week, and turned in Friday when you enter the door. Work turned in
to the basket will be collected after bell work is completed. Assignments not turned in by this
time will be considered late.

Free Write Fridays

Every Friday, students will respond to a free writing prompt in their notebooks. Free writes
should take up at least half a page, unless otherwise instructed. You are expected to write the
entire length of the free write. You may listen to music during free write time as long it is at a
reasonable volume. Free writes count as 5 points of your bell work for the week.
Sustained Silent Reading (SSR)
Every TUESDAY and THURSDAY students will be expected to read for 10 minutes following
the completion of bell work. Students will need to choose a book to read in its entirety so that
they can complete a book report by the end of the quarter. Students should choose a book which
they have access to both in and outside of class. However, if students forget their book or do not
have one, they are welcome to borrow one from our classroom library. Students who do not
participate in SSR will lose participation points for the day.
In-class Work
Students will be allowed time in class each week to complete all assignments. We do not like
giving homework. Students should use these in-class opportunities to ask questions about
assignments and complete as much as they are able to. Assignments finished in class can be
turned into the basket upon completion. It is mandatory that noise levels stay appropriate, and
that all students stay on-task. We understand that there are many exciting things to discuss, but
you should understand that in-class time to work is a privilege. If students cannot maintain an
appropriate noise level, or do not take advantage of this time to complete coursework, we have
the right to revoke it. (This means all assignments would be completed as homework.)

Ending Class
We will give you 2-3 minutes before class ends to pack up your things. During this time, you
should safely and neatly store any materials or unfinished assignments. Notebooks should be
stacked in groups of 6 and put away by one designated person on the shelves by our desks. You

should make sure to grab all of your things, and to throw away any trash you might have
accumulated. You WILL NOT pack up your things until we tell you to. Students who pack up
early may be asked to stay after class to help clean.
Late Work and Make-Ups
Students who were absent can find handouts in the box by the notebooks. They should check this
box for any work they may have missed before asking either of us. Students who received a low
grade on an assignment can also make changes to it to raise their grade. These edits can be made
with us during advisory or on their own time. Late assignments will not be accepted for credit
after two weeks. This gives you EIGHT separate advisory opportunities to receive help on the
assignment.
Tutoring
We are more than happy to sign students out for advisory with us each Monday, Tuesday,
Thursday, or Friday. Students failing our class will be required to attend advisory and make up
missing assignments until their grade improves. Students can meet within the hour before school
each day for additional help with assignments or further explanations of content. Students can
also meet with us during lunch, if they discuss doing so beforehand. Feel free to e-mail us with
questions anytime.
Materials and Supplies
All materials for the day can be picked up by the windows when you enter class. If you need any
additional materials for the day (pens, paper, highlighter, etc.) raise your hand and one of will get
them for you. Please return our supplies to us at the end of the class.

Attendance
We will contact parents for excessive absences or tardies. Students who miss class will also be
expected to make up all missed work. If you are absent the day of an exam or quiz, you will be
signed out to advisory to take it. Since you earn points for your daily bell work, accumulating
