Family Bakery in Gate City, Virginia

President Maureen Moffet opened the meeting by welcoming everyone and

introducing our guest speaker, Joe Tennis, an author of many area-relevant books.
She also introduced Lois Quillins guest, Donna Fugate. Kathy Lasters membership
was transferred, as requested. Condolences were made to Helen Henderson on the
death of her brother, Jack Newland. There were 32 members in attendance.
The Thought for the Day was presented by Sue Carter. She shared some of the
sad statistics of the children in our schools today. We were encouraged to be that
ray of light to their lives to help them transform into happy, successful adults. Sue
read a poem she created called Fireflies and Butterflies to express the
transformations that can occur.
Joe Tennis presented an enthusiastic program on how his books have evolved over
many publications, sharing some stories and experiences from his research. He
autographed purchased books afterwards.
We enjoyed a delicious lunch before conducting the business portion of the meeting.
The business meeting was called to order by Maureen. The minutes of the February
meeting needed no corrections or additions, so will stand approved as printed.
Treasurer, Brenda Bingham reported that our checking account balance stands at
$4160.08 and the savings account is presently at $1976.25.
Corresponding secretary, Stamps Sewell, read two letters to our chapter. The first
was a thank you note from the Faith in Action food pantry, thanking us for our
donations. The second letter was a letter from Kathy Laster concerning her transfer
to Chi Chapter.
Lois Quillin reported for the Southwest Coordinating Council, reminding everyone
that the registration for the Joint Meeting with Chi chapter on April 11 has a
deadline of March 27. We were all encouraged to attend, especially since we are
honoring one of our own.
The Committee Spotlight was the Headquarters Committee, reported on by Sandra
Jonas. She told us more about our Richmond headquarters house which is used for
meetings and some lodging. The Quarters for Headquarters and the sales of the
gently used jewelry go to the upkeep of this property.
Kathy Musick reported for the Scholarship committee that we had two very well
qualified applicants and it was recommended that the $1000 scholarship would be
presented to Taylor Evans, a student at Emory & Henry College. A vote of the
membership approved the candidate and it was passed.

Old Business
For our joint meeting with the Chi chapter in April, turn in your registrations soon.
Help was needed for working at our chapters table, and Mary Sue Smith and Heidi
McElroy volunteered. The IOTA state convention deadline is coming up April 24-26 in
Charlottesville. Members are encouraged to attend both of these events.
New Business
Maureen was authorized to spend up to $50 to provide a basket representing our
chapter at the IOTA State Convention. The proceeds will go toward supporting the
state headquarters.
The meeting was adjourned and our next meeting is the joint meeting with Chi on
April 11 in Marion, Virginia.

Linda Strutner
